Shirley Dean Theander, known affectionately as Dean to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida, at the age of 88. Born on September 1, 1935, in Lost Spring, Kansas, Dean's journey through life was marked by his unwavering strength, generous spirit, and the deep love he held for his family and country.
Dean's life was one of dedicated service. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring as a Gunnery Sergeant. His commitment to excellence and the values of the Corps were evident in every aspect of his life, both in and out of uniform. Following his military career, Dean continued to lead by example, inspiring those around him with his work ethic and integrity.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Jean Theander, and his cherished children: Raymond Theander and his wife Leslie, Dorida Rew, the late Ronald Theander, Karla Bagdikian and her husband James, Randy Theander and his wife Mei, Dale Maslyn and his wife Joanne, and Keith Maslyn and his wife Sandra. Dean was a proud patriarch, leaving behind a legacy that includes 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his memory with love and admiration.
Dean's siblings, Arlen and Mary, will hold dear the memories of their brother, who was predeceased by his brother Richard. Each family gathering was a testament to the joy and unity Dean fostered throughout his life, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
Not one to sit idle, Dean had a passion for life that extended beyond his family and service. His interests were as varied as they were rich, with each hobby and pastime reflecting a facet of his multifaceted personality. He was a man who found as much joy in the quiet moments as he did in the grand adventures, and his warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.
As we bid farewell to Dean, we remember a man of honor, a loving husband, a guiding father, and a steadfast friend. His laughter, wisdom, and courage will be missed by all, but his legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he loved.
