Robert Frank Vlcek, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida, at the age of 93. Born on June 9, 1930, in Silver Lake, Minnesota, Robert's journey began in the heart of Minnesota, but his zest for life and dedication to his country took him far beyond his hometown. As a young man, he bravely served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, a period that shaped much of his character and instilled in him a profound sense of duty and patriotism. Following his military service, Robert built a successful career at Abbott Laboratories in Procurement, where he was known for his strong work ethic and amiable personality.
After retiring, Robert found joy in the simpler pleasures of life. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), a testament to his enduring commitment to his fellow servicemen and women. An avid bowler, he could often be found perfecting his game and sharing laughs with friends at the local bowling alley. His love for gambling was another pastime that brought him excitement and joy. Robert also had a knack for tinkering in his shed, where he could spend hours on end fixing or creating things.
For 24 years, Robert was a member of the Foxwood Village community, where he made countless memories and friendships that he enjoyed. He was a constant source of help among his neighbors and friends. One of his very favorite things to do was to walk or give golf cart rides around the neighborhood to his beloved granddog, Cubbie - who brought him so much joy.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth Vlcek, who was the cornerstone of his life. His legacy continues through his daughter, Blondine Markey of Fairfax, VA; his son, Robert F. Vlcek Jr., of Waukegan, IL; stepdaughters Lori Hernandez (David) and Lisa Chapman of Lakeland, Florida; grandchildren Elizabeth Markey (Daniel), John P. Markey (Stephanie), Tiara Lynn Vlcek, Brian Hernandez, Jason Hernandez (Hope), Jordan Hernandez (Jamie), Kaylyn Cruickshank (Christian), and Haley Wheeler; as well as his cherished great-grandchildren Declan Elliot, Owen Markey, William Markey, Colin Markey, Ryan Petry, Donovan Daniels, Ilana Daniels, Bradley Griffin, Kevin Griffin, Olivia Hernandez, Jacob Hernandez, Chloe Hernandez, Tiera Williams, and Cali Carson.
Robert's life was a journey of service and commitment—a journey that has now come to a peaceful end. Graveside service will be held at 1:00pm June 10th, 2024 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
