L.C. Battle, known to many as Gus, passed away on April 8, 2026, in Lakeland, Florida, at the age of 75.
Born on May 2, 1950, in Lakeland, Florida, Gus was a lifelong resident of the Lakeland area and carried with him the values of hard work, faith, and family throughout his years. Those who knew him will remember a man who was dependable, kind, and grounded in the simple but meaningful things in life.
Gus worked for CSX Railroad, where he was respected for his dedication and strong work ethic. He approached his work with the same commitment that he brought to every part of his life. Beyond his career, he was a farmer at heart and found great satisfaction in caring for his cattle and tending to the land. He appreciated honest labor and the rewards that came from a life spent working with his hands and staying close to the outdoors.
He also enjoyed the pastimes that brought him peace and joy. Gus loved hunting and fishing, and he treasured the time spent outdoors. These interests were more than hobbies to him. They were part of the life he built and the memories he created with those closest to him. He was an attendee of Griffin Baptist, where his faith was an important part of his life and provided strength and comfort through the years.
Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Leander Rabun Battle and Hilda June Battle, and by his sister, Suzette Witmer. Their memories remained a part of his life, and he carried their influence with him always.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Shirley Battle, who stood beside him through a lifetime of shared memories, love, and devotion. He is also survived by his sons, Clark Battle and his wife, Elizabeth, and Mark Battle and his wife, Amber. Gus took great pride in his family and valued the bonds that connected them across generations. He is further survived by his brother, Leander Rabun Battle Jr., and by his cherished grandchildren, Emily Ackerman, Caleb Battle, and Skylar Choquer. His legacy continues in his great-grandchildren, Ella Battle and Maya Choquer, who brought him great joy and added another treasured generation to his family.
Gus will be remembered as a man of integrity, humility, and enduring love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy shaped by hard work, faith, and devotion to those he held dear. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his memory will remain a lasting comfort to his family and friends
