James “Joe” Joseph Rushing, 73, a long time resident of Croom-A-Coochee, FL and then of Tampa, FL passed away on December 23, 2020. Born February 6, 1947.
He is predeceased by our parents, Charles and Oveida (Raulerson) Rushing, sisters, Cathy Tibbetts, Mary Chestnut, brothers, Charlie Rushing and Jack Rushing.
He leaves behind a loving family, sisters, Barbara Sanchez, Susie Harlow, Verna Jenkins (Boogie), Betty Orcutt (Bob), Rosa Luer (Carl) and one brother, Ralph Rushing (Debbie). He will also be missed by numerous Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Great Nephews.
Joe joined the Army in 1964 and served courageously in Korea during the Vietnam era. He worked for about 14 years as a telephone contractor through out multiple states before returning home to care for our Mom and Dad in Croom-A-Coochee for 20 years. He was a Most Masterful Mason at the Bushnell Lodge #30. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 0101 of Bushnell.
He worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Bushnell about 5 years before starting work at the Sumter County Corrections in Bushnell. He retired from corrections in 2010.
After 2 hospitalizations Joe needed to move into an Assisted Living Facility in Tampa and in November was finally able to move in with sister Betty and her husband Bob.
Joe loved fishing and working outside as well as mastering a 3 wheeled bike.
Joe was a wonderful brother, son, friend, and Uncle. He loved his family and he loved life.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm Friday, January 8, 2021 with services to follow at 2:00pm, both at Bethel Baptist Church, 3125 W. Socrum Loop Road, Lakeland, Fl 33810
