James Oliva Obituary

James J. Oliva, a cherished soul whose laughter and stories enriched the lives of many, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida, at the age of 82. Born on July 21, 1942, in the beautiful town of Hilo, Hawaii, James's early years were cradled by the gentle waves and warm breezes of the island.

James's love for the ocean was as vast as the Pacific itself. A remarkable surfer, he once conquered the legendary Banzai Pipeline, a feat that echoed throughout his life as a testament to his adventurous spirit. Beyond the surf, he found solace and joy in fishing and boating, activities that allowed him to immerse himself in the tranquility of nature.

In 2008, James's heart was captivated by Sheila Watkins, and they married, weaving their lives together in a tapestry of love and mutual respect. Their union brought together a blended family that included his children, James Oliva Jr. and Monica Oliva, and his stepson, Justin Watkins. James was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his Hawaiian family, who had instilled in him the values and humor that he carried throughout his life.

Known affectionately as Mr. Miyagi by the staff at the facility where he spent his later years, James's great sense of humor never waned. He was a masterful storyteller, whose tales could transport listeners to the heart of Hawaii or the deck of a fishing boat at dawn. His faith in Jesus was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him with a light that shone brightly for all to see.

Those who knew James would describe him as loving, funny, and faith-filled. His presence was a blessing, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by his warmth and kindness.

As we bid farewell to James J. Oliva, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a legacy of laughter, and a faith that never faltered. He leaves behind a world that is infinitely richer for his having been in it, and memories that will continue to inspire and comfort us all. James's journey on earth has ended, but the waves of his influence will ripple through time, touching future generations with the love and joy he shared so generously.
