Clyde Smith Obituary

Clyde Eugene Smith, affectionately known as Gene to his friends and family, was a cherished figure in the Winter Haven community and beyond. Born on November 17, 1938, in Winter Haven, FL, he lived a full and vibrant life until his peaceful passing on August 3, 2024, in Lakeland, FL. Gene was a man whose life was marked by a steadfast dedication to his family, his work, and his country.

Gene's early life in Winter Haven set the stage for a life of integrity and hard work. A proud graduate of Winter Haven High School in 1957, he carried the lessons of his youth throughout his life. His commitment to service was evident in his time with the US Air Force, where he served his country with honor. Following his military service, Gene channeled his leadership and craftsmanship into a successful career as a Florida Licensed Class A General Contractor. As a co-owner of Gulf Coast Dream Homes in Plant City, FL, he left a tangible legacy in the form of homes across the Tampa Bay region, where he worked for over 40 years.

Gene's passions extended beyond his professional life. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed league bowling in the 80s and was a familiar face at the local bowling alleys. Fishing was more than a hobby for Gene; it was a passion he nurtured from his childhood. He spent countless hours on the chain of lakes around Winter Haven and ventured into Tampa Bay for Grouper fishing season. His love for the outdoors was also evident in his gardening, where he took pride in cultivating the land and canning his harvest, a skill passed down from his mother.

During deer season, Gene was in his element. For over three decades, he could be found in his favorite deer stand in the woods around the Orlando metro area. It was a tradition he shared with his parents, siblings, and children, reinforcing the bonds of family through the great outdoors.

Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley Smith, his parents Reuben and Edith Smith, brothers Reuben Junior, Minor Leroy, and Jack Edward, and stepdaughter Pamela McKay. His loving spirit is carried on by his brother Raymond Smith Sr., his children Timothy and Heather Smith of Canton, GA, Keith and Deborah Smith of Auburndale, FL, and Hope and Gregory Algren of Ruskin, FL. His stepchildren Tommy Spencer of Tennessee, and William and Tina Kolwyck of Ocala, FL, also continue to honor his memory. Gene was a proud grandfather to 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.

Described as handy, generous, and loving, Gene was a man who could fix anything, give selflessly, and love unconditionally. His generosity extended beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of many in his community. Gene's legacy is not only in the structures he built and the family he raised but also in the countless lives he enriched with his kindness and warmth.

Clyde Eugene Smith's life story is one of dedication, joy, and love—a narrative that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of the impact one person can have on so many. Gene's memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his life's work will stand as a testament to his extraordinary character. He was truly a pillar of the community, and his absence will be felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
