Charles E. Butterfield Jr., age 93, of Lakeland passed away on February 21, 2022. He was a resident of Plant City for the last 3 years.
He was born in Urbana, Illinois and was the son of the late Charles and Bessie Butterfield.
He is survived by his children, Carey Butterfield (Robert Caruso) and Jeffrey Butterfield. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Laura (Lawrence) Cocozello and Benjamin (Jenna) Schade, great-grandchildren, Lawrence Cocozello III, Greyson and Paighton Schade, and his 2 nieces and 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Gayle and sisters, Gladys Travers and Estelle Heeren.
Charles enlisted in the US Navy as a pre-med student and served in World War II from 1946-1948 where he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. He was a high school science teacher and district supervisor in Ramsey, New Jersey. After retiring, he became a consultant on various science textbooks and was deemed a distinguished educator among his peers. Not only was he a WWII veteran and esteemed educator, he was a member of the Masons. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and was an avid fan and supporter of Florida Southern Basketball and was a member of their Six Man Club.
A service will be held in the fall at The National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
